Can Thermostats Go Bad?

Short answerYes. DOE says a thermostat might need new batteries or might need to be replaced entirely, and it says to check that yours reads the correct temperature. Carrier lists dead batteries and loose wiring as common thermostat problems. Check the settings and batteries first. If the screen stays blank or the system won't respond, have a technician test it.

Signs it may be the thermostat

These signs are our own checklist, not from a source. DOE, Carrier and Bryant list the causes to check, but not this list.

Check before you buy a new one

Could it be something else?

We expect a blank thermostat can mean the system lost power, not that the thermostat failed. Carrier also lists loose wiring. If you've checked the basics, we recommend having a technician test whether the thermostat is sending a signal to the system. You can read our answer about replacing one yourself. EPA says mercury thermostats need proper disposal, so don't throw one in the trash.

Common questions

Can a thermostat affect the AC?
Yes. DOE lists thermostat problems among common AC issues. We expect that if it reads wrong or isn't set properly, the AC may run too long, not long enough or not at all.
Why does a bad thermostat run my AC all the time?
We didn't find an official explanation for that case. A wrong reading is one possibility that DOE's advice points to. A technician can test it.
