Can a Roof Leak Be Fixed From the Inside?

Short answerWe don't think so. From inside, you can catch water, dry wet areas and look for where it's coming in, but we expect the repair belongs on the roof's outer surface, and that inside patches only treat the symptom. We recommend a licensed roofer. Minnesota Extension, writing about ice dams, warns that winter roof work risks injury.

What you can do from inside

Our own safety advice: be careful in attics and walk only on framing. If water has reached wiring or light fixtures, we recommend turning off that circuit at the breaker if it's safe, and calling an electrician.

Why we don't expect inside patches to last

We expect water to enter from outside and travel along framing, so the wet spot on your ceiling may not be right below the opening. University of Minnesota, writing about ice dams, says not to repair interior damage until ceilings and walls are dry, and to correct the cause at the same time. EPA lists roof leaks as a common moisture source that can support mold.

Who to call

We recommend a licensed roofer for roof work at height. NRCA, the roofing contractors' association, publishes step-by-step repair manuals for trained crews, and its manual covers long-term repairs. Temporary measures are a separate question, so ask your roofer about tarping. We don't give steps for roof repairs.

After a storm

We recommend checking with your insurer before permanent repairs, and keeping receipts for any emergency work. Coverage depends on your policy.

Roof Leak? What to Do Now and When to Call a Roofer

Common questions

Can I use roof sealant from the attic?
We found no official source that supports it, and our guide explains why sealants have limits. We expect sealing it from below may trap water in the roof. Have a roofer look at it.
How long can I wait?
We found no official deadline. Dry things right away and call soon, since EPA ties mold growth to moisture and Minnesota Extension says to dry wet areas right away.
