Thermostat Not Working? Blank Screen and Other Fixes
Short answerA thermostat that is not working usually has dead batteries, a tripped breaker, an off switch at the furnace, or a furnace door that is not fully closed. Replace the batteries, check those power sources, and confirm the mode and temperature settings. If it still will not respond, it may need replacing or a technician.
Safety first
- Turn off the heating and cooling breaker before you pull a thermostat off its base or touch any wires.
- Do not connect thermostat wires to house wiring. If your thermostat is on thick house wires, it may run on full line voltage, so call an electrician or HVAC technician.
- Do not bypass a furnace door switch or any safety switch. If the problem is at the furnace, stop there.
Likely causes
| Cause | How to tell | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Dead batteries | The screen is blank or shows a low battery icon. | Install fresh AA alkaline batteries with the correct polarity. |
| No power from the system | The screen is blank with new batteries, or it has no batteries and relies on system power. | Check the breaker, the system power switch and the furnace door. |
| Wrong mode or setpoint | The screen works, but the system does not respond. | Set it to heat with the target above room temperature, or cool with the target below it. |
| Recent wiring change or failed thermostat | The problem started after an install, or nothing above helps. | Have a technician check the wiring, or replace the thermostat. |
What you need
- Fresh AA alkaline batteries (check your model)
- Small screwdriver
- Phone, to photograph the wiring
How to fix it
- Check the settings. Make sure it is set to heat or cool. For heat, set the temperature higher than the room. For cooling, set it lower. Resideo's guide says to wait 5 minutes for the system to respond.
- Replace the batteries. Gently pull the thermostat from its wall mount if your model works this way, and put in fresh alkaline batteries. The Resideo T1 Pro shows a low battery icon about two months ahead.
- Check the breaker and power switch. Look for a tripped heating or cooling breaker at the panel and reset it once. Make sure the power switch on or near the furnace or air handler is on.
- Check the furnace door. Make sure the panel on the furnace is closed securely. Many furnaces cut power to the thermostat when the door is loose.
- Replace the thermostat if needed. Turn off the breaker. Take a photo of the wires and their labels before you disconnect anything. Follow the new thermostat's instructions, matching each wire to the same terminal. Check that the new model is compatible with your system before you buy it.
When to call a professional
- The breaker trips again after you reset it.
- The screen is on and settings are right, but the heat or AC never starts.
- You have no labeled wiring, need a new wire added, or have a heat pump or multi-stage system you are not sure about.
What it costs to have fixed
Thermostat Replacement is estimated at $100 to $510 nationally. See your state
Common questions
Why is my thermostat blank?
The batteries are the first thing to check. If it still stays blank, check the breaker, the system power switch and the furnace door. Any of those can cut power to the thermostat.
Why does my thermostat say heat on but no heat comes out?
The thermostat is calling for heat, but the furnace is not responding. Check the furnace switch, the door panel and the filter. If those are fine, call a technician.
Should my thermostat use batteries if it is wired?
It depends on the model. On the Resideo T1 Pro, batteries are optional backup if it is wired for AC power and required if it is not.
Why does my thermostat say Cool On and keep flashing?
That is usually normal compressor protection. The Honeywell T6 Pro manual says the compressor must wait a few minutes before restarting, and the message flashes during that wait, then stops when the compressor turns on. Source
Why does my thermostat say Waiting for Equipment?
On Honeywell's X1N thermostat, that message means a built-in delay is protecting the compressor, because restarting it too soon after shutdown can damage it. After a few minutes the message disappears and the display shows Heat on or Cool on. Source
What does In Recovery mean on my thermostat?
Honeywell's T6 Pro manual explains that the thermostat learns how long your system takes to reach a temperature and turns on early, so the house is comfortable at the time you scheduled. It is a normal feature, not a fault. Source
What does Temporary Hold mean on my thermostat?
On the Honeywell T6 Pro, it means you changed the temperature by hand. The new setting holds until the next scheduled period begins, or you can cancel the hold to go back to the schedule. Source
Should my thermostat fan be on or auto?
Trane recommends AUTO, so air flows only while the AC is running. If the fan is set to ON, it can blow warm, unconditioned air even when the AC is not cooling. Source
