Why Won't My Garage Door Respond to the Button or Remote?

Short answerIf only the remote fails, check for lock mode first, since Chamberlain says a constantly flashing wall control means remotes won't work. Then check the remote's battery and range. If the wall button and remote both fail, check that the opener has power. If it does and nothing happens, call a garage door technician.

Only the remote fails

Both the wall button and the remote fail

We suggest starting with power: check whether the opener's light works and whether it's plugged in, and check the breaker for that circuit. If power is fine, we recommend a technician to check the wiring and controls.

If you're stuck outside

Chamberlain suggests trying your other controls, such as a remote, keypad or app. It also says an Outside Trolley Release, if one is already installed, lets you release the door from outside.

Stop and call if the door moves oddly

If the door feels heavy or needs two hands to lift, DASMA says it's probably out of balance and that you could get hurt fixing it yourself. We give no spring steps. CPSC says that if the door doesn't reverse when it hits a 2x4 on the floor, disengage the opener until it's adjusted or repaired.

Garage Door Won't Close? Check the Sensors First

Common questions

Why does my remote work only up close?
Chamberlain points to a weak signal or interference and mentions LED bulbs as a possible source. Check the battery first.
Can a power outage stop it?
We expect so, since an opener runs on power. DASMA's checklist describes a red manual release handle that detaches the door from the opener. We recommend following your manual, pulling it only with the door fully closed, and not using it if a spring may be broken.
