Contractor Problems in Montana: Complaints and Your Options

Short answerIf a contractor job goes wrong in Montana, here is what we could confirm on official pages: where to file a complaint, bond or insurance, liens on your home. Each item links to its source. Keep your contract, payments and photos.

Where to file a complaint

A state handout says to report concerns to the Office of Consumer Protection at 800-481-6896 or 406-444-4500, or contactocp@mt.gov. It also says to record changes, problems or complaints in a letter between you and the contractor. Source

Bond or insurance

The state handout says to confirm the contractor's active registration with the Department of Labor and Industry, and to ask for proof of liability insurance and a bond. It does not say whether insurance or a bond is legally required. Source

Liens on your home

The state handout says to withhold final payment until after inspection and receipt of a lien release. It does not state notice rules. Source
