Contractor Problems in Michigan: Complaints and Your Options

Short answerIf a contractor job goes wrong in Michigan, here is what we could confirm on official pages: where to file a complaint, liens on your home. Each item links to its source. Keep your contract, payments and photos.

Where to file a complaint

The Enforcement Section reviews complaints against residential builders, maintenance and alteration contractors, electricians, mechanical contractors and plumbers, such as negligence causing physical harm, work without a permit or license, and fraud or deceit. The bureau says it does not have legal authority over contractual, monetary or warranty issues. Source

Liens on your home

A 2017 LARA release says to make the final payment only when the job is complete, you have inspected and approved it, and suppliers and subcontractors have been paid as shown by waivers of lien. It does not state notice deadlines. Source
