Refrigerator Not Cooling? What to Check First

Short answerA refrigerator that isn't cooling usually has a wrong setting, blocked air vents, a door that won't seal, or dirty condenser coils. Check the temperature with a thermometer, move items away from the vents, make sure the door closes, and clean the coils. Food should stay at 40°F or below, so call for repair if it won't.

Likely causes

CauseHow to tellWhat fixes it
Temperature settingIt was recently changed, or the unit is new. A new unit needs about 24 hours.Change it one step, then wait at least 24 hours before you change it again.
Blocked air ventsTall items or packages sit against the vents, and some shelves are warmer.Move items away so the cold air can move.
Door not sealingThe door does not close by itself from halfway, or something is blocking it. The gasket may be loose.Remove what blocks it, clean the gasket, and raise the front legs so the door swings closed.
Dirty condenser coilsDust on the coils, in a home with pets or grease. Many newer models do not need this, so check the manual.Unplug it and vacuum the coils with a soft brush.
Hot room or no space around itIt is in a hot garage, near an oven, or tight against the walls.Give it clearance, and move it if the room is outside its range.
Failed fan, compressor or controlAll of the above are fine, and it is still warm after 24 hours.Schedule a repair and leave it plugged in until the technician arrives.

What you need

How to fix it

  1. Measure the temperature. Put an appliance thermometer on a middle shelf and wait several hours. The refrigerator should be at or below 40°F, and the freezer at 0°F. Move food into a cooler with ice if it is warmer than that.
  2. Check the settings. Set the control one step colder and wait at least 24 hours. On dial or number models, a higher number is usually colder. On models that show degrees, lower it by one degree.
  3. Clear the vents and load. Move food away from the air vents. Avoid adding a lot of warm food at once, and open the door less often while it recovers.
  4. Check the door. Remove anything blocking the door. Clean the gasket with mild soap and check that it seals. Adjust the leveling legs so the front sits a little higher than the back, which helps the door close by itself.
  5. Clean the coils if your model needs it. Unplug the unit. Remove the base grille if your model has one, and vacuum the coils with a soft brush. Check the manual first, since most GE units from 2001 onward and many others do not need this. Plug it back in.
  6. Check the location and test. Keep at least 1 inch of space on the sides, top and back, unless your manual says otherwise, and keep it away from heat sources. Wait 24 hours and check the thermometer again.

Common questions

Why is my refrigerator not cooling but the freezer is?
Cold air often moves from the freezer into the refrigerator through vents. Check that packages are not blocking them. If the vents are clear, a fan or defrost problem is possible, and you need a technician.
What temperature should my refrigerator be?
FDA says at or below 40°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer. Check with an appliance thermometer, not just the dial.
How long does a new refrigerator take to get cold?
GE and Whirlpool both say to allow about 24 hours after installation.
Can a hot garage stop a fridge from cooling?
Yes. GE lists 60°F to 110°F as the working range for the installation area, and Whirlpool lists 55°F to 110°F. Check your manual for your model.
