Should I Repair or Replace My AC Unit?

Short answerENERGY STAR's undated checklist for contractors favors repairing an AC unit that is under 10 years old with a good service record and only a minor problem. It favors replacing one that is over 10 years old with repeat problems or costly repairs. If two or more replace signs apply, it's probably time to consider a new one.

ENERGY STAR's checklist

The EPA's ENERGY STAR program says that if two or more items in the Replace column apply to you, it's probably time to consider replacing the system.

What else to weigh

Mississippi State University Extension says replacing a unit that is only 10 years old with a more efficient one may save 20 to 40 percent on cooling energy costs. If you replace, it advises replacing both the indoor and outdoor units when they differ in age, refrigerant or efficiency. Lifespan sources vary, from 10 to 15 years (NAHB's 2007 study) to about 20 (Mississippi State).

Common questions

Is it worth fixing a 15-year-old AC?
A minor repair may buy time, but at 15 years it is past ENERGY STAR's 10-year mark and at the top of NAHB's range. If the repair is costly or problems keep coming, the checklist points to replacement.
Can I replace only the outside unit?
Mississippi State Extension advises replacing both the indoor and outdoor units if they differ in age, refrigerant or efficiency. Ask your contractor whether your existing indoor coil is a match.
