No Hot Water in House? What to Check First

Short answerNo hot water usually means a tripped breaker or failed element on an electric water heater, or a gas supply, pilot or control valve problem on a gas one. Check the breaker and whether the tank simply ran out. Leave other repairs to a plumber, and get out and call from outside if you smell gas.

Common questions

Why do I have no hot water in my whole house?
If every faucet is cold, the water heater is usually the problem. On electric units, check the breaker. On gas units, the gas supply, pilot or control valve are the usual causes. A plumber should handle anything past the breaker.
How long does a water heater take to get hot again?
One maker lists 30 to 40 minutes for a gas tank and 60 to 90 minutes for an electric tank after the hot water runs out.
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
Tank units last about 8 to 12 years on average. A unit over 10 years old with several problems, or any leak at the base of the tank, usually points to replacement.
How do I know my water heater is going bad?
A.O. Smith links popping or rumbling to sediment at the bottom of the tank, crackling or hissing to scale on electric elements, and discolored or smelly water to bacteria and a worn anode rod. We recommend having a plumber check it. If you smell gas, we recommend leaving first and calling from outside. Source
