Common questions

How much does electrical panel upgrade cost?
A typical electrical panel upgrade costs about $1,000 to $3,150 in the U.S. That covers a replacement main panel, up to 200 amps, without utility fees. The range reflects parts, job difficulty and local labor rates.
Which states cost the most for electrical panel upgrade?
Labor is the part that changes by state. See the table on this page for each state's estimate.
How long does an electrical panel upgrade take?
Fixr says a typical installation takes four to eight hours with two electricians and can stretch to several days depending on your home's wiring. Moving the panel to a new location adds a few days. Source
How do I know if I need to upgrade my electrical panel?
Have a licensed electrician decide. CPSC says to have one check your home's electrical system if you notice dimming or flickering lights, sizzling or buzzing sounds, an odor of overheated plastic, plugs that pull out easily, sparks, hot switch plates or outlet covers, or breakers that need resetting often. We recommend not opening the panel yourself. Source
Can I upgrade my own electrical panel?
Rules are local. Portland, Oregon, for example, requires an electrical permit to replace a service panel and lets a homeowner do electrical work only in a home they own and live in. Ask your local building department, and we recommend a licensed electrician for this job. Source
Does an electrical panel upgrade qualify for a tax credit?
The IRS page says you can claim the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, which listed panelboards of 200 amps or more when needed to support qualifying equipment, for improvements made through December 31, 2025, and it gives no later date.
